Literary criticism and reviews
I particularly enjoy writing literary criticism, reviews and review essays aimed at a non-specialist audience. Most of my recent reviews have appeared either in the Times Literary Supplement (for instance, this review of Toby Martinez de las Rivas’ latest collection of poetry) or in The Friday Poem (including collections by Philip Gross, Anthony Anaxagorou, Peter Davidson and Angela Leighton, as well as the Penguin Anthology of Spiritual Verse edited by Kaveh Akbar). Currently I also have essays forthcoming in PN Review and The Dark Horse.
I write regularly about poetry in several languages and from a range of periods in my own successful substack, Horace & friends. This sometimes includes reviews of recent books (like this somewhat controversial review of the 2024 T. S. Eliot prize-winning collection Self-Portrait as Othello by Jason Allen-Paisant). For now, all content on the substack is free.
